Directions for Blooming Heart Scrunchie

Scrunchie

Round 1 - Grab your hair elastic, hook, and yarn. To begin, join your yarn around the hair elastic with a Chain (ch). This chain is only used to join the yarn and does not count as the first stitch. (Insert your hook into the hair elastic, Yarn Over (YO), and pull up a loop. YO again and pull through the loop.)

Insert your hook into the hair elastic again, YO, and pull up a loop (two loops on your hook). YO and pull through both loops. You have now made your first Single Crochet (SC) around the hair elastic, and it counts as the first stitch.

Continue working SC evenly around the hair elastic. For this pattern, work any multiple of 5 stitches.

I made 60 stitches for my scrunchie. As you work, gently stretch the hair elastic to make room for more stitches if needed.

Single crochet stitches worked evenly around the hair elastic

Once you reach the first stitch, you can either join with a regular Slip Stitch (Sl St) or an Invisible Join.

Invisible Join: Remove your hook from the loop (be careful not to lose the loop) and insert the hook from the back to the front through the first stitch. Place the loop back onto your hook and pull it through the stitch.

Round 2 - YO and insert your hook into the same stitch where you completed the Invisible Join. Complete your first Half Double Crochet (HDC) in that stitch. Make one more Half Double Crochet (HDC) into the next stitch.

Into the next stitch, make 2 Puff Stitches.

First Puff Stitch: YO, insert your hook into the next stitch, YO, and pull up a loop (3 loops on your hook). YO again, insert your hook into the same stitch, YO, and pull up a loop (5 loops on your hook). Repeat once more: YO, insert your hook into the same stitch, YO, and pull up a loop (7 loops on your hook).

YO and pull through the first 6 loops (2 loops remain on your hook). YO again and pull through the remaining 2 loops. You have completed your first Puff Stitch.

Make one more Puff Stitch into the same stitch.

After completing the second Puff Stitch, skip the next stitch. Work one Half Double Crochet (HDC) into the following stitch.

Repeat from * to * until the end of the round:

*Work one HDC into each of the next 2 stitches, make 2 Puff Stitches into the next stitch, skip the next stitch, work one HDC into the following stitch.*

Note: There are always 3 HDC between each set of Puff Stitches. Since the round begins with 2 HDC, it will end with 1 HDC, keeping the stitch pattern consistent.

Once you complete the last HDC in the final stitch, join the round with a Sl St or an Invisible Join, just as you did in Round 1.

Rounds 3–4 - Repeat Round 2.

Work each HDC into the HDC from the previous round. Make 2 Puff Stitches into the space between the 2 Puff Stitches from the previous round.

Note: At the end of Round 4, do not join the round. Instead, fasten off after completing the last stitch. This is where you will attach the decorative tail.

Completed first round of puff stitches evenly worked around the hair elastic, creating a full crochet scrunchie base.

Decorative Tail

To begin the decorative tail Ch 2, then make the same 2 Puff Stitches as you did for the scrunchie. Chain 1 and turn.

Make 2 Puff Stitches into the space between the 2 Puff Stitches from the previous row. Ch1 and turn.

Repeat this row until you reach your desired length. My decorative tail is 22 rows long.

Attaching the Decorative Tail

Place the decorative tail where you joined the rounds (except for the last round). Position it however you prefer, either centred or with one side longer than the other.

Once you are happy with the placement, use your yarn needle to sew the tail securely to the scrunchie, stitching between the Puff Stitches all the way around.
