If you’re looking for a stitch that’s full of texture and coziness, the Bean Stitch might just be your new favourite! 💜
It creates a beautifully puffy yet sturdy fabric, making it perfect for blankets, scarves, or any project that needs a bit of squish. Just a heads-up—it does use a little more yarn than simpler stitches, but the result is totally worth it.
In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through the Bean Stitch step by step, with written instructions, a photo tutorial, and a full video so you can follow along however you like. Let’s get started!

It's 2 pages with basic crochet abbreviations and symbols, hook sizes in US and UK versions, all the yarn types (with recommended hooks and projects), etc. Feel free to click on the pic or a link to my shop where you can find more details.

Recommended Materials
In this tutorial, I use LionBrand Cotton24/7 cotton yarn. I find that the texture stands out more with cotton yarn, and its bright colours are beneficial during tutorials. For this yarn I use a 4mm/G-6 crochet hook.
However, if you're new to crocheting and just practicing, I highly recommend using any solid color acrylic yarn that works with a 5mm/H-8 hook size.

Below is the crochet chart for the Bean Stitch. It's an excellent method for learning to read crochet charts, and understanding written instructions can sometimes be beneficial.

Directions for Bean Stitch
Start with even foundation chain.
ROW 1 - Insert the hook into the 2nd ch from the hook and make SC, then SC in each stitch (you have odd number of stitches). Then ch 1 and turn the project.

ROW 2 - Start with SC into the first st.

Then sk st insert the hook into the next one, then YO, pull up a loop (2 loops on your hook), YO and insert the hook into the same st, YO and pull up a loop (4 loops on your hook), repeat it one more time (YO, insert the hook into the same st, YO and pull a loop - 6 loops on your hook). YO and pull up a loop through all six loops. Then ch 1. You have completed your first Bean Stitch.
Then sk the st and work your Bean stitch into the next one. You repeat this (sk st, Bean Stitch) until the end of the row until you have your last 2 stitches.
Once you created your last Bean stitch you should have 2 sts left for this row. You skip the second-to-last stitch and make SC into the last one. (you always start and end the row with SC to make the clean edges). Then ch 1 and turn the project.

Your first row of Bean Stitch is done.

ROW 3 - Begin with a SC in the first stitch. As you spread the row, you'll notice the "chain spaces" where you'll insert your Bean Stitches. After your initial SC, skip the next stitch and create your Bean Stitch in the space. Always chain 1 after completing each Bean Stitch. Continue this pattern until you finish your last Bean Stitch.
You should now have 1 stitch remaining. Work a SC into the last stitch of the row. Chain 1 and turn your work. Repeat ROW 3 until you reach your desired length.
Now your 3rd row is complete!
