Recommended Materials

In this tutorial, I use LionBrand Cotton24/7 cotton yarn. I find that the texture stands out more with cotton yarn, and its bright colours are beneficial during tutorials. For this yarn I use a 4mm/G-6 crochet hook.

However, if you're new to crocheting and just practicing, I highly recommend using any solid color acrylic yarn that works with a 5mm/H-8 hook size.

Directions for Crossed Double Crochet Stitch

NOTE: In this tutorial, I include a Single Crochet row between each Crossed Double Crochet row to give the stitch a bit more structure and texture. However, you don’t have to add that row—it’s totally optional! The most important part is learning how to crochet the Crossed Double Crochet Stitch confidently. Feel free to play around and see which version you love best.

ROW 1 - Start with any odd number of the foundation chain and then, make a Single Crochet (SC) into the second chain from the hook, and continue working one SC into each chain across the row. By the end of this row, you should have an even number of stitches. Ch 2 and turn.

ROW 2 - Ch 2 counts as a first DC of the row. Now, skip the next stitch, and make one DC into the following stitch. Then, go back and make one DC into the skipped stitch. That way you create your Crossed Double Crochet Stitches.

Repeat this sequence until the end of the row. Your last stitch will be a regular Double Crochet (DC).

Always follow this pattern: Skip one stitch, make your first DC (#1) into the next stitch, then make your second DC (#2) back into the skipped stitch.

If you'd like to add a row of Single Crochet (SC) between your Crossed Double Crochet rows for extra texture and structure: Chain 1, then work 1 SC into each stitch across. When you're done, chain 2 and continue with the Crossed Double Crochet as in Row 2.

Want to stick with Crossed Double Crochet only? Simply chain 2 at the end of your row and repeat Row 2 for a beautifully textured fabric!

I hope you loved learning the Crossed Double Crochet Stitch as much as I loved sharing it with you! 💛 It’s such a fun and versatile texture—perfect for everything from scarves to blankets and beyond.

If you gave it a try, I’d love to hear how it went! Leave a comment below and let me know what project you plan to use this stitch for—or if you added those single crochet rows between!

And if you found this tutorial helpful, don’t forget to share it with a crochet friend who’d enjoy it too.

Happy stitching,

Lenka
