I designed the Northern Flakes Pillow Case as a cozy winter project that brings simple texture and a bold snowflake motif together in an easy, relaxing way. It’s the kind of crochet that’s perfect for slowing down, enjoying the colourwork, and creating something warm and timeless for your home.
This pillow case was also created to pair beautifully with the matching Northern Flakes Blanket, so if you love a coordinated, handmade look, you can easily turn these two pieces into a cozy winter set. Whether you’re making just the pillow case or crocheting both, I hope this project brings you joy and a little extra warmth as you stitch along.

NOTES:
This pattern is worked entirely in Half Double Crochet (HDC).
Every row ends with a turning chain of 1, which does not count as a stitch. It’s only a turning chain.
You may see stitch counts written like 29 (36, 44)A, 2B, 29 (36, 44)A throughout the pattern.. Each number tells you how many stitches to work, and each letter tells you which colour to use. For example::29A = 29 stitches in Colour A, 2B = 2 stitches in Colour B
Numbers in brackets refer to the pillow case size: For example, 29 (36, 44) means: 29 stitches for a 16" pillow case, 36 stitches for a 20" pillow case and 44 stitches for a 24" pillow case.
If a stitch count is written as a single number without brackets, it means the stitch count is the same for all pillow sizes.
Abbreviations:
Ch - chain
FHDC - foundation double crochet
St - stitch
HDC - half double crochet
Sl St - Slip Stitch
TIPS & TRICKS
This pattern includes two helpful techniques demonstrated in the video tutorial to make your crocheting faster and neater:
1.Invisible Knot for Joining Yarn (YouTube tutorial: 2:27)
If you prefer to avoid weaving in ends, this method is perfect. You will run out of Colour A during the project, and the invisible knot lets you join a new yarn seamlessly without leaving extra ends to weave in later.
2. How to Crochet 2+ Half Double Crochet Rows at Once (YouTube tutorial: 4:29)
This technique is a total game changer—especially at the beginning of the pillow case, where you work 24 rows in a single colour. It lets you work multiple rows at once, saving time while keeping the stitch structure intact.
DIRECTIONS for the Pillow Case
Option 1: Ch 61 (HDC into the 2nd ch from the hook), HDC in every ch until the end of the row (you should have 60 in colour A. Ch 1 (only turning chain). Turn. Continue with ROW 2.
OR
Option 2: Foundation HDC Row (count as a first row) - 60, Ch 1 (only turning chain), turn.

How to Seam the Pillow Case
Align your pillow case with the insert so the snowflake is centred. On the back of the pillow, overlap 6 rows. Use stitch markers to secure the overlapping sides as well as the corners—this will make seaming much easier.
Thread your needle with yarn and, using the whip stitch method, seam the sides of the pillow case.
How to Make Tassels
Grab any object (a notepad or anything that gives you your desired tassel length) and wrap the yarn around it as many times as you’d like. Make a note of how many wraps you use so you can create 4 equal sections of strands.
Take one section and pull it through one corner of the pillow case. Fold it in half, then pull out one strand and use it to tie the tassel approximately 1" below the corner. Tighten securely, smooth the strands with your fingers, and trim the ends so they’re nice and straight.
Repeat this process for each corner, and your pillow case is complete!
Ta-da! Your Northern Flakes Pillow Case is done ❄️🤍
I hope you enjoyed crocheting this cozy, snowflake-inspired pillow case as much as I enjoyed designing it. Whether it’s styled on your couch, bed, or favourite reading nook, I hope it brings a little extra warmth and handmade charm into your home.
